My work explores negation, placement of the individual in a system (society), and the documentation of actions.
Negation is simultaneously a denial of an existence and a negative thing or condition. My work's use of negation defines an actuality that, while it is always present in our culture, is not always apparent. An individual is defined by what they are not, and an environment may be defined by the absence of people (made more apparent with remains as evidence of their previous existence in it). My negative statements and burns balance on a line of friendly irony and abrasive cruelty. Our casual, societal norms are unmasked as awkward challenges with the human issues of confidence and bigotry.
My photomanipulations and "burns" present a variety of perspectives that exist with use of various individuals and their positions in society. Stereotypes have been established as a means of judging - politically correct or not - and they are a key to our understanding of our own place in the system. Behavior generally turns into accommodation, depending on the present audience. Our day-to-day interactions revolve around what we understand as base characteristics of "types" of people, and these types are present in my work. Humor exists as a buffer for the uncomfortable nature of many of the pieces, while it attempts to appeal to a broad audience.
